This course explores human resource challenges and processes, including employment legislation, discrimination, harassment, management strategies in staff planning and selection, orientation, health and safety. Students compare and contrast the traits, behaviours and attributes of supervisors, managers and leaders and explore their own leadership style as it relates to decision making and communication in the work environment. Taking personal responsibility for the management and leadership of human resources through empowerment, performance management, coaching and counseling, progressive corrective action and termination and the management of union relationships are examined through case studies and in-depth discussion. Skills essential to building effective working relationships such as leadership, team building, decision making, motivation, and conflict resolution are analyzed.
