Program Overview

Are you interested in a career that is rewarding, in high demand offering meaningful employment upon graduation? One that offers a great deal of flexibility and scope for movement in a thrilling environment where you can share your passion for people and incredible service? Then the hospitality industry is for you.

Humber’s Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management diploma program is a leader in hospitality management training. You will develop your business management skills via hands-on learning, theoretical classes and practical labs led by industry experts. You will have opportunities to:

  • enhance your resumé with industry certifications such as service excellence, food safety, responsible alcohol beverage service, and wine and beer knowledge
  • embark on a 12-week industry placement providing you with on-the-job experience and industry contacts
  • gain valuable instruction and guidance from faculty with extensive industry experience in concepts such as marketing and sales, leadership management, finance, and sustainability
  • learn leading technologies used by notable global brands including Silverware, the leading restaurant point-of-sale system and Opera, the premier hotel management system software

Note: For students starting in September or January, there is a scheduled one semester break between second and third semester.

Work-Integrated Learning  

In fourth semester, students participate in a with a hospitality organization. Our internship co-ordinator provides direction and assistance for each student in securing a field experience.

The Humber Room

The Humber Room

Students in Humber's culinary and hospitality programs put their practical skills to use preparing lunches and dinners in a real world environment. The 120 seat restaurant offers world class cuisine, replicating a fine dining restaurant. The state-of-the-art teaching restaurant is the most modern environments for students to learn in.

Gourmet Express

Students in this program can complete projects with Gourmet Express. Gourmet Express products are student made in our Humber Kitchen under the guidance of expert chefs in the practical classes of our baking & pastry arts and culinary programs. Pick up a delicious meal on-the-go at Humber’s Gourmet Express.

Wine Tasting and Mixology Lab

Wine tasting and demonstrations take place in a luxurious theatre where students are introduced to wines of the world and the intricacies of food and wine pairing. The lab is equipped with its own wine cellar/cooler, a demonstration induction cooking unit, glassware racks, storage and washing equipment and full audio visual and satellite broadcast capabilities. In the mixology lab, students learn the theory and practical skills of a wide range of beverages and mixology including creating mixed drinks, understanding beers, spirits and wines.

Industry Leadership

Humber College’s Longo Faculty of Business, in partnership with the Greater Toronto Hotel Association (GTHA), launched the Hotel Management Leadership Program. The part-time program helps address a significant gap in the hospitality industry labour market. Specifically, it trains management-level employees to become senior leaders in the hotel industry.

Presented to an outstanding and energetic student in the Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management program who is in good academic standing. This professional individual demonstrates a passion for service excellence, pride, teamwork, contagious enthusiasm and is a future hospitality leader of tomorrow.

Gabe Magnotta Award of Excellence for Wine Knowledge
Presented to a student in the Hospitality − Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management program, who has achieved excellence, appreciation and understanding in the field of wine knowledge. Awarded in honour of Gabe Magnotta, co-founder of Magnotta Winery and one of the true pioneers of the "Canadian Wine Renaissance".

Greater Toronto Hotel Association Award
Presented to a continuing student in the Hospitality Management - Hotel and Restaurant program who shows leadership, high academic achievement and has been employed in the hotel and restaurant industry, as recommended by faculty to the dean.

Hospitality Award of Excellence
Presented to a student in the Hospitality Management program who demonstrates high leadership academic achievement and has acted as an ambassador to the Hospitality Management-Hotel and Restaurant program.

Hotel and Restaurant Management Faculty Scholarship
Presented to a student in the *Hospitality-Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management* program who has demonstrated the ability to be a successful member of the hospitality industry by exhibiting leadership skills, maintaining academic standards (GPA of 70%+), and fostering excellence in customer service. The selected recipients must also meet the following criteria:

  • Must be in financial need
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Must reside in Ontario

Hotel and Restaurant Operations Mangement Leadership Award
Presented to students enrolled in the Hotel and Restaurant Operations Mangement Diploma who have demonstrated excellence and commitment to the Faculty of Business through leadership, initiative, dedication, personal motivation, involvement in class activities and school special events, while maintaining sound academic standing.

Hospitality and Tourism Scholarship
Presented to a student in the *Hospitality-Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management* or *Hospitality-Event Management* program who has demonstrated high academic achievement (GPA or 70% or greater). The selected recipients must also meet the following criteria:

  • Must be in financial need
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Must reside in Ontario

Leschuk Memorial Award
Presented to a student in the Hospitality − Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management program who demonstrates outstanding performance during work placements in technical aspects and interpersonal skills, complemented by excellent writing skills detailing work experience in a written report.

Monte Carlo Inns Hospitality Scholarship
Presented to a student who is in their final year of the Hospitality Management program who has demonstrated not only academic skills, but also leadership and co-operation in class. In addition this student is in good academic standing and has overcome significant challenges. The student is responsible, reliable, dependable and shows enthusiasm, and a positive attitude towards his/her peers; while demonstrating extra-curricular leadership in their program of study or in the broader Humber community, as recommended by faculty to the dean.

Saverio Schiralli Scholarship
Presented to a student in their final year of the *Hospitality - Hotel & Restaurant Operations Management* program with excellent academic standing (GPA of 80 % or greater), exceptional theoretical knowledge of enology and viticulture as well as superior wine tasting skills. The selected recipients must also meet the following criteria:

  • Must be in financial need
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Must reside in Ontario

Smart Serve Award
Presented to returning students, one from the Hospitality − Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management program and one from the Hospitality − Event Management program, who have demonstrated an understanding of the liability and responsible service issues of the alcohol beverage industry and have achieved consistent academic marks of 75 per cent or higher during the first two semesters of their respective programs.

Tourism and Hospitality Management Faculty Scholarship
Presented to a student in the *Hospitality-Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management* program who has demonstrated the ability to be a successful member of the hospitality industry through leadership skills, maintaining academic standards, customer service skills, and fostering excellence. The selected recipients must also meet the following criteria:

  • Must be in financial need
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Must reside in Ontario

Compass Group Award
Presented to a second-year student in either the Hospitality − Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management or the Culinary Management program with good academic standing, who demonstrates strong leadership and teamwork skills and is interested in a career in contract food service and facilities management

Study Abroad

Semester 4 Taiwan: This 18-week program from the end of February through the end of June offers our students the opportunity to embrace the local culture, customs and language of Taiwan and our partner institution National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism.

Each year we offer a variety of experiential learning trip opportunities for students to study abroad. Our annual short duration experiential trips in May are approximately two weeks in length. These faculty led study abroad trips are confirmed in the Fall semester.

These trips vary each year and are subject to availability, participation and eligibility requirements. Additional fees apply.

Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA)

Qualified students have the opportunity to take the Certification Hotel Industry Analytics (from Smith Travel Research).

How To Become An Apprentice

Becoming an Apprentice

Find an employer willing to sponsor you as an apprentice.

Contact the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to register as an apprentice.

Work with your employer approximately one year before attending Humber.

Domestic Students

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program.

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Admission selection is based on the following three requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
      • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

    or

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

Post-Admission Requirements

Once you have been accepted, and have confirmed your offer, you may need to complete a further set of requirements related to your program (Post-Admission Requirements).

Professional Industry Standards

Upon acceptance into the program, you must follow professional industry standards for decorum, uniform, hygiene and personal presentation. The restaurant and beverage lab courses have strict uniform and attendance standards and policies, which are mandatory for successful completion of these key courses.

It is mandatory to wear a Humber-issued restaurant and beverage uniform in practical lab classes in this program. Admittance to these classes is not permitted if you are not in uniform. The cost for the uniform has been added to your first semester tuition fees. In order for the uniform to be available for the first day of class, students must submit their size requirements via an online order form.

Computer Skills

Computer skills, specifically proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are an important asset in successfully completing the program.
