Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Promotion

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
    • Grade 12 Mathematics (MAP4C, MCT4C, MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent)
    • Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (SBI3C, SBI3U or SBI4U or equivalent)
    • One Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

Selection: Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

 


Post-Admission Requirements:

Once admitted into the program, you will be expected to follow professional industry standards for decorum, uniform, hygiene and personal presentation. Practical lab classes have strict uniform and attendance standards and policies which are mandatory for successful completion of these key courses.

  • It is mandatory to wear a Humber issued uniform in practical lab classes in this program. Admittance to these classes is not permitted if you are not in uniform. The cost for the uniform has been added to your first semester tuition fees. In order for the uniform to be available for the first day of class, students must submit their size requirements via an online order form.   • Computer skills, specifically proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are extremely important to successfully complete the program.

The 2016/2017 fee for two semesters was:

  • domestic $4,192.60
  • international $14,200.

Additional Costs

$450 – textbooks (per semester); $100 – safety shoes; $175 – tool set; nominal fees (varying by semester) to cover the costs of industry field trips.

Future Study Options

Graduates of any two-year diploma program at Humber who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 70% or greater will be eligible to enter year three of the 4-yr Bachelor of Applied Management (BAM) at the University of New Brunswick.  Depending on the diploma program, students may be exempted from study in certain courses and therefore, requested to take alternate courses offered by the Faculty of Business.

Our Program

Humber’s Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Promotion diploma program prepares you for a career promoting health and wellness to individuals and groups of all ages and to encourage people to live a healthier lifestyle. Unique in nature, it is the only diploma program of its kind in Canada. In this program you will:

  • develop an understanding and knowledge of general and clinical nutrition, sport nutrition and physiology
  • gain valuable hands-on experience coaching individual clients and conducting health promotion seminars and workshops in our unique Humber Centre for Healthy Living
  • learn how to relate knowledge of essential nutrients into practical nutritious eating for clients by discovering the techniques of healthy cooking, recipe development and menu planning
  • nutritionally assess and analyze menus and recipes integrating financial, health and culinary criteria.

This innovative program will provide you with the education and experience to work in the rapidly growing health and wellness industries. The curriculum is founded on evidence-based nutrition information and is taught by registered dietitians and other regulated health-care professionals.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Conduct assessments of nutritional status, well-being, and lifestyle for clients low to moderate risk and effectively communicate assessment results.

  • Apply knowledge of fundamental and clinical nutrition to prescribe appropriate diets, active living, and lifestyle programs to enhance nutritional status, health, and well-being of clients of low to moderate risk.

  • Utilize appropriate interviewing and behavior change coaching and counseling skills to promote or enhance nutritional status, health, active living, and well-being of clients.

  • Collaborate with individuals in the selection and adoption of strategies to improve their nutritional status, health, and well-being.

  • Develop, revise and evaluate food items, recipes, and menus to maximize the nutritional content of healthy eating plans.

  • Apply knowledge of the global food supply, sustainability and food technology in the development and revision of recipes, menus and healthy eating plans for individual and groups of clients.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and events which respond to identified needs and interests of clients and maximize the benefits of diet, health, and well-being.

  • Contribute to community health promotion strategies to improve the health of individuals, groups, organizations and institutions.

  • Assist in the development of business plans for health and wellness programs, activities, and facilities.

  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to ensure standards and regulations for food safety and sanitation are met.

  • Implement ethical practices and ongoing personal and professional growth and development plans.

  • Interact effectively and professionally with clients, staff, and volunteers in health and wellness programs, activities, and facilities.

Work Placement

All students will complete a 15-week experiential learning course in our on-campus Humber Centre for Healthy Living. Two main components of this placement include:

  • Providing nutrition counselling to Humber staff: students provide nutrition education and counselling sessions for clients and support them in developing and achieving their health and nutrition related goals. This includes diet assessment, recommendations and development of a client tool kit
  • Nutrition awareness events: students develop and deliver group educational workshops and sessions for community, business and industry partners in various settings.

All students will receive hands-on experience in our on-campus Humber Centre for Healthy Living. Drawing on the expertise of HRT faculty and students, the CHL offers a range of programs, services, and events for MAKING HEALTHY HAPPEN within the Humber community.

The Lifestyles of Health & Sustainability industry (LOHAS) offers many opportunities to help individuals live more healthy and sustainable lives. You can expect to be a part of this rapidly growing, multi-billion dollar industry and find employment planning and promoting a healthy lifestyle in workplaces such as:

  • fitness and wellness centres
  • weight management clinics
  • corporate and community food and food service organizations
  • educational facilities
  • government agencies
  • entrepreneurial ventures in nutrition and health coaching, menu planning, meal preparation and nutritional analysis.

Professional Accreditation, Endorsement and Recognition

Students in this program will have the opportunity to earn TrainCan - Advanced Food Safety Training and Certification (Advanced fst™), along with CPR and First Aid.

Note: The requirements for the additional credential(s) are determined by the granting body, which is independent from the College. Students are encouraged to obtain the specific requirements directly from the granting body before enrolling. 

Study Abroad

Qualified students in this program are eligible to undertake an experiential learning opportunity to study the Mediterranean diet on a trip to Italy where you will experience the food, culture and lifestyle of the Mediterranean. Our Study Abroad trips operate annually in May and are 10 to 15 days in length.

Students are also eligible to undertake a study abroad service learning trip, which provides rewarding experiences and opportunities to do community service across the globe.

New study abroad trips and initiatives are introduced each fall. Additional fees apply.

Nutrition Industry Appreciation Event

Faculty, staff and students gathered together on May 30, 2016 to thank work placement employers in Nutrition programs who provide endless opportunities to students and provide such an important component to the Food & Nutrition and Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Promotion programs.
