Humber’s Hospitality - Event Management diploma program offers you the knowledge, practical experience, industry exposure and professional certification necessary to embark on an exciting and successful career as an event planning professional.
Our program provides comprehensive learning and training opportunities aimed at assisting students prepare for and transition to valued positions in the event industry including:
In the first semester of the program, you get immediate experience on campus working at a high profile event. And for the next two years, you will be thoroughly immersed into the world of special events via networking, volunteering and event execution opportunities. Students will be working in The Humber Room restaurant life lab for a full semester. Essential skills will be taught to prepare students for many different types of events.Courses Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
Support an industry and workplace service culture by adopting a positive attitude and professional decorum, accommodating diverse and special needs, and contributing as a team member.
Deliver customer service and solutions that anticipate, meet and/or exceed individual expectations, as well as organizational expectations, standards and objectives
Use marketing concepts, market research, social networks, sales and revenue management strategies, relationship management skills and product knowledge to promote and sell hospitality services, products and guest experiences.
Apply business and revenue models as well as basic accounting, budgeting, financial and administration skills to support the effective management and operation of a variety of organizations delivering hospitality services and products.
Comply with relevant organization and workplace systems, processes, policies, standards, legal obligations and regulations, and apply risk management principles, to support and maintain efficient, safe, secure, accessible and healthy hospitality operations.
Use appropriate technologies to enhance the quality and delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences and to measure the effectiveness of hospitality operations.
Keep current with hospitality trends and issues, and interdependent relationships in the broader event management sectors to improve work performance and guide career development.
Use leadership, teamwork, conflict and relationship management skills and tools, as well as knowledge of organizational behaviour, labour relations, employment standards and human rights to contribute to a positive work environment.
Respond to issues and dilemmas arising in the delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences by using and promoting ethical behaviour and best practices of corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
Follow the five phases of event management (assess feasibility, design the event, coordinate operations, execute on-site and evaluate the outcomes) to ensure client satisfaction.
Work experience is integral to developing a diverse and successful career in the event management profession. In this program, you will participate in a comprehensive seven-week work placement experience (280 hours) in your final semester before graduation. While on work placement, you will apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in the classroom to real event work in the field, network, and develop professional connections and relationships you will carry with you throughout your career.

In the Wine and Mixology room, students are introduced to wines of the world and the intricacies of food and wine pairing. In the mixology lab, students learn the theory and practical skills of a wide range of beverages and mixology including creating mixed drinks, understanding beers, spirits and wines.

Qualified students in this program may have a unique opportunity to complete their 4th semester living abroad in Europe or Taiwan. Students are enrolled with Humber and pay an additional program fee for this Semester 4 optional program. Participation is subject to eligibility standards and an application process.
Current Opportunities Include:
Semester 4 Europe: In January and February, our students are based In Strasbourg, France and will spend eight weeks living, touring and studying in Europe. Students will take unique courses that count towards the completion of their fourth semester credits.
Semester 4 Taiwan: This 18 week program from the end of February through the end of June offers our students the opportunity to embrace the local culture, customs and language of Taiwan and our partner institution National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism.
Each year we offer a variety of experiential learning trip opportunities for students to study aboard. Our annual short duration experiential trips in May are approximately two weeks in length. These faculty-led study abroad trips are confirmed in the fall semester.
Qualified students in this program may also apply to a study abroad service learning trip to contribute to a global community. Past service learning trips were to Nunavut and Nicaragua. In addition, eligible students have the opportunity to apply for a study abroad experiential trip to Peru.
These trips vary each year and are subject to availability, participation and eligibility requirements. Additional fees apply.

The legacy of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games lives on in the partnership that was first announced in October 2014 between Headwaters Tourism, Humber College and the Town of Caledon.
A trio of students from Humber’s Event Marketing class, under professor Ron Caughlin, won a marketing competition in December that had classes create campaigns for the African airline.
Event Management students work with real organizations to conceive, plan and execute several events over the course of the academic year.
