A. Kalene Finnegan, 22

Q. Program and year graduated?

A. Hospitality Management, 2015 and Event Management, 2016 (I did the pathway program which allowed me to obtain two diplomas in three years).

Q. Why did you choose Humber College?

A. I chose Humber College because of the welcoming and belonging feeling I received when I attended an Open House. Being able to see how interactive and supportive the professors were and seeing the top of the line classrooms, I could not imagine attending any other post-secondary institution.

Q. Which class did you find most beneficial?

A. All of my classes were beneficial and I use the knowledge I gained in my classes during my day to day duties in the workforce. From the Hospitality Management program, the Humber Room with Richard really stands out as this class allowed me to understand food and wine pairings, delivering a memorable guest experience and working in a team environment. The Careers class with Janet allowed me to prepare my resume, practice mock interviews and prepare my portfolio. From the Event Management program, the PR & Sponsorship class with Natalie was a great opportunity as we were able to plan and execute an event from start to finish and contact and reach out to vendors for sponsorship opportunities.

Q. What do you enjoy about your career?

A. I enjoy how every day is different! Being able to come into work, face new challenges and solve them to create a positive guest experience. There is no better feeling in the world than being able to put a smile on a guest’s face knowing you were able to take part in a memory for them.

Q. What advice would you give future/current students taking this program?

A. I would say my biggest piece of advice would be to stay focused and never lose sight of your dreams. You can do anything you put your mind to!

Q. In what ways did Humber prepare you for the work world?

A. Humber not only provided me with the skills and tools to be successful, but they also allowed me to take part in industry initiatives.

Q. What opportunities would you urge other students to take advantage of?

A. Network, network, network! I understand these events can seem daunting and intimidating but it really is crucial who you know in this industry. I also encourage students to get involved within the school of HRT. Being part of associations are a great way to get involved and sometimes even gain scholarships!

Q. In your opinion, what are 5 crucial skills needed to preform your job?

A. Passion, dedication, perseverance, organization and patience.

Q. Why hospitality?

A. Hospitality is a career path my mother and grandmother are in, they are my two biggest inspirations in life and I aspire to make them proud each day.

Q. How did your experience at Humber help you find employment after graduation?

A. I actually gained employment through my internship! I did my final internship at the Fairmont Royal York in Sales & Catering and once my internship was completed there wasn’t an opportunity for me at the time which is when I decided to gain more Front Desk experience at Deerhurst Resort, after a few months my old internship supervisor contacted me for a job and here we are almost two years later!
