Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management (ESLM) students, along with faculty, Leigh Gavarkovs and John-David Kato, took a field trip to Toronto Rehab’s Rumsey Center as part of their Group Exercise Leadership experience.

Students were learning to deliver group fitness classes that can be inclusive of participants with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases as part of University of Ottawa’s Heart Wise program.

The workshop they attended was part of the process to becoming Heart Wise Exercise Leaders. Several presenters attended the workshop, including Dr. Paul Oh, the Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Rehabilitation Program at the Peter Munk Centre and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute at the University Health Network. Rhona Glasson presented on osteoarthritis and exercise while the Women’s Hospital discussed diabetes and gender differences with heart disease.

The day ended with a Heart Wise exercise class led by the student’s course instructor, Leigh Gavarkovs. Overall, the experience of hearing directly from industry leaders provided students with an invaluable learning opportunity while reinforcing concepts discussed in class.
