Christel’s penchant for wanderlust first showed at the age of four when she volunteered to do the grocery shopping during a vacation in Spain. Born in the Netherlands, she was fortunate to explore much of Europe before immigrating to Canada as a teenager with her family. After graduating from McMaster University with an honours BA in French and Political Science and obtaining a PR certificate from Humber College she could not resist the call to explore her new homeland. A natural story teller (in four languages), Christel loved sharing ‘her’ Canada with thousands of international travellers as a free-lance tour director.
Always up for a personal challenge, she next earned her MBA at Wilfrid Laurier University and then started her in-office career as Manager of Incentive Travel at Jonview, Canada’s largest inbound receptive tour operator. In 2009, Christel was offered the role of Sales Manager, Asia Pacific. Applying her strong relationship building skills and cross-cultural sensitivity she significantly grew sustainable market share. Additionally, Christel’s experience includes tour & brochure planning, destination marketing, product development & research, client training and statistical analysis. She also developed an effective and highly active employee engagement program and spearheaded all client appreciation events including multiple day high-end itineraries. In her spare time, Christel has been a dedicated volunteer board member for an industry association as well as two not-for-profits. Christel looks forward to joining the Humber School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism as a full-time faculty member in September and to contributing to its vibrant culture of learning, sharing and exploring.
