For Sport Management and Recreation & Leisure Services students, this time of year is not just exciting because it’s the holiday season – it’s also a time for them to come together and celebrate the world of sport. Last week, students and faculty from these programs held a series of events intended to get people moving, learning, fundraising and engaged in sport. The festivities will continue next semester for the annual Toronto Sport Summit.
Check out the successful events our students planned and executed last week!
Sport and Recreation students kicked the week off with a friendly dodgeball tournament to help the Humber community dodge the stress of upcoming assignments and tests. Students signed up in teams of ten for a little friendly competition. The day was also filled with food, games and raffles. All proceeds made from the event were donated to Jumpstart Charity, which gives children the opportunity to participate in sport.
On the evening of December 13th, a special student and alumni event was held to commemorate Humber’s 50 years of sport. Humber Sport Management alumni – Jennifer Knobbs, Thiago Freire, Marlon Piedrahita, Peter Milway and Jessica Cunhan - returned to host an alumni panel where they answered questions about their careers, schooling and advice they have for current students. The event also launched the Sport Management Association, which connects leaders, students and professionals in the industry. Thank you to all of our alumni who joined us to make this event possible!
Sports Week capped off with our Hawk-a-Palooza event in support of Jay’s Care Foundation. This event was packed with fun activities including basketball nets and a mini-putt area, plus tasty treats and raffles. Raffle participants had the chance to receive two 100-level tickets to a 2018 Jays game AND an autographed baseball by the Jays team. There was also a very special appearance from a Toronto FC player who came to sign autographs and chat with the students.
