Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
      • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

    or

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Additional Costs

Approximately $400 per semester – textbooks, certifications, other materials; there will be nominal fees to cover the costs of industry field trips in specific courses.

Pathways are academic routes that students can take to move from one credential to another.

PATHWAYS WITHIN HUMBER AFTER THIS PROGRAM

Qualified graduates of the Hospitality-Event Management program may be considered for admissions and may receive credit towards the first year of study.  For more information please contact your Program Coordinator.

Graduates with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent or more may be considered for admission. Graduates may then complete the degree with the equivalent of six semesters of full-time study plus a paid work term. Successful applicants must also possess:

  • ENG4U or Humber’s WRIT 100 or 200 level course, or equivalent, with a minimum grade of 65 per cent.
  • Any Grade 12U-level Mathematics or equivalent at the postsecondary level with a minimum grade of 60 per cent. The Math requirement must be completed prior to begining the second semester of the degree program.  Humber offers a Math equivalency course as an option.  Additional course fees will apply.

Admission will be based on availability in the program.

*The advanced standing outlined is a general guideline. Diploma graduates may be required to take courses in lower semesters in order to meet the overall degree learning outcomes.

Diploma to Degree Transfer Student Scholarship

All students who have achieved a cumulative program grade point average (GPA) of 80% or better upon graduation of their Ontario college diploma will be automatically awarded a one-time scholarship of $2,500 in recognition of their academic achievement at the diploma level.

How to Apply

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program. Plan and execute events as you learn

Humber’s Hospitality - Event Management diploma program offers you the knowledge, practical experience, industry exposure and professional certification necessary to embark on an exciting and successful career as an event planning professional.

Our program provides comprehensive learning and training opportunities aimed at assisting students prepare for and transition to valued positions in the event industry including:

  • on-site event management experience
  • guest lectures from industry professionals
  • field trips to local events and elite GTA event venues
  • networking at industry conferences
  • case studies to broaden knowledge of planning events locally, nationally and internationally.

In the first semester of the program, you get immediate experience on campus working at a high profile event. And for the next two years, you will be thoroughly immersed in the world of special events via networking, volunteering and event execution opportunities. Students will be working in The Humber Room restaurant live lab for a full semester. Essential skills will be taught to prepare students for many different types of events.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Support an industry and workplace service culture by adopting a positive attitude and professional decorum, accommodating diverse and special needs, and contributing as a team member.

  • Deliver customer service and solutions that anticipate, meet and/or exceed individual expectations, as well as organizational expectations, standards and objectives

  • Use marketing concepts, market research, social networks, sales and revenue management strategies, relationship management skills and product knowledge to promote and sell hospitality services, products and guest experiences.

  • Apply business and revenue models as well as basic accounting, budgeting, financial and administration skills to support the effective management and operation of a variety of organizations delivering hospitality services and products.

  • Comply with relevant organization and workplace systems, processes, policies, standards, legal obligations and regulations, and apply risk management principles, to support and maintain efficient, safe, secure, accessible and healthy hospitality operations.

  • Use appropriate technologies to enhance the quality and delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences and to measure the effectiveness of hospitality operations.

  • Keep current with hospitality trends and issues, and interdependent relationships in the broader event management  sectors to improve work performance and guide career development.

  • Use leadership, teamwork, conflict and relationship management skills and tools, as well as knowledge of organizational behaviour, labour relations, employment standards and human rights to contribute to a positive work environment.

  • Respond to issues and dilemmas arising in the delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences by using and promoting ethical behaviour and best practices of corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

  • Follow the five phases of event  management (assess feasibility, design the event, coordinate operations, execute on-site and evaluate the outcomes) to ensure client satisfaction.

Work Placement

Work experience is integral to developing a diverse and successful career in the event management profession. In this program, you will participate in a comprehensive seven-week work placement experience (280 hours) in your final semester before graduation. While on work placement, you will apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in the classroom to real event work in the field, network, and develop professional connections and relationships you will carry with you throughout your career.

Qualified students have the opportunity to earn the Smart Serve Ontario Responsible Alcohol Beverage Service training and certification.

Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET)

Qualified students have the opportunity to earn the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 Certification.

Note: The requirements for licensure are determined by the granting body, which is independent from Humber College. Students are encouraged to obtain the specific requirements directly from the granting body before enrolling.

Study Abroad

Qualified students in this program may have a unique opportunity to complete their 4th semester living abroad in Europe or Taiwan. Students are enrolled with Humber and pay an additional program fee for this Semester 4 optional program.  Participation is subject to eligibility standards and an application process.

Current opportunities include:

Semester 4 Europe: In January and February, our students are based in Strasbourg, France and will spend eight weeks living, touring and studying in Europe. Students will take unique courses that count towards the completion of their fourth semester credits. 

Semester 4 Taiwan:  This 18-week program from the end of February through the end of June offers our students the opportunity to embrace the local culture, customs and language of Taiwan and our partner institution National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism.

Each year, we offer a variety of experiential learning trip opportunities for students to study aboard.  Our annual short duration experiential trips in May are approximately two weeks in length.  

Qualified students in this program may also apply to a study abroad service learning trip to contribute to a global community. Past service learning trips were to Nunavut and Nicaragua. In addition, eligible students have the opportunity to apply for a study abroad experiential trip to Peru.

These trips vary each year and are subject to availability, participation and eligibility requirements. Additional fees apply.
