Skills Ontario is an organization that leads in preparing Ontario’s youth for the highly-skilled economy of tomorrow. They support youth in developing skills for success in the trades and technologies. Every year Skills Ontario hosts competitions for youth to demonstrate that they are the best of the best in their field. Culinary is just one of these fields.

On Saturday, April 7th, the School of HRT hosted Skills Ontario for the Qualifying Culinary Competition for high school students. This competition is held because the main culinary competition is so popular that only the most advanced students who qualify are able to compete.

The day began at 10 am when the students had four hours to complete three courses to present to the panel of judges. The first course was a soup appetizer, the second course was a meat-based entrée and the third course was a dessert.

After four fast-paced hours in the kitchen, the students had a small time frame to submit their plated meal. Judges ranked students based on taste, texture, balance, presentation and more.

After the competition was over, students were told whether they would be moving on to the official Skills Ontario Competition, and the top three students received their awards in front of an audience.

Congratulations to all students who joined us at Humber for the Skills Ontario Qualifying Competition. You are well on your way to becoming top chefs in the industry! We’re looking forward to seeing you compete at Skills Ontario.
