Dana Smith - Recreation Coordinator, Parks and Recreation, Town of Caledon

Age: 39
Program/Graduating Year: Recreation and Leisure Services, 2000

Role: Oversees General Programs within a family of buildings which includes children/youth, adult and family programs, summer and March Break camps, PA days, birthday parties and community events. Responsible for staff hiring, training and supervision of program leaders and instructors. Provides ongoing communication to staff, program participants, parents, and the general public.

The best part of the job: “My position allows me to be creative with the programs I offer to the community, as well as the chance to see the results of the experience. I particularly enjoy the training atmosphere; after years of working in this field it’s always great to share my knowledge with others who can then go out and help make a difference too.”

How Humber helped: “The Recreation and Leisure Services program at Humber was a great platform for the structure and organized side of recreation. I had worked as a camp counsellor and at a community centre for many years prior to Humber. While the experiences I had were amazing, I needed a foundation to build upon. Humber helped tie the things I enjoyed doing, and the leadership skills I had, into a solid career.
