Q. Why did you choose Humber College?
A. I chose Humber because of the sense of community and inclusivity. I felt as though their values and teaching practices were in line with mine, which made it an easy choice for me!
Q. What are 5 skills Humber taught you that are necessary to be a top performer in this job?
A. Organization, teamwork, punctuality, problem solving and strong work ethic.
Q. How was your major related to your current work?
A. Throughout my program we hosted a lot of events, both internal and external, which gave me the experience and ability to do what I do now. We deal with clients on a daily basis and Hospitality gave me the tools to interact with those clients appropriately. When planning events, I focus majorly on venue assignment and catering options. I took an elective class throughout my course (Catering Management, I believe) which helped provide insight to the banquet world and budgets within. Had I not taken this course, I would not have as much knowledge regarding BEO’s, costs, etc.
Q. Which class did you find most beneficial?
A. Either Marketing or Catering Management. Not only because my teachers were amazing, but they were so engaging it made the content easier to learn. Because of this, I have knowledge in these areas that I use on a daily basis when marketing our brokerage’s materials or organizing internal/external events.
Q. How did Humber prepare you for the work world?
A. Humber’s classes were very practical. I learn best this way so having hands on courses allowed me to see what the work world would be like after I graduated.
Q. What was the biggest obstacle you faced during your time as a student?
A. Getting used to living in residence. I missed having dinner with my family every night and was not used to having someone else cook for me. I absolutely LOVE to cook and felt I couldn’t do that in residence. Getting used to my class schedule, locating classrooms, and attending Frosh/Humber events was a breeze for me – I loved that part!
Q. How did your experience at Humber help you find employment after graduation?
A. I completed an internship at the Residence Inn Toronto Airport in my last semester which gave me some work experience into the Hospitality world. The Sales Manager that I worked alongside with referred me for my first job after graduation. I then worked as a Guest Service Agent at the Radisson Admiral Hotel for just over a year.
Q. What do you enjoy about your career?
A. Everyday is different.
Q. What accomplishment are you most proud of since graduating?
A. Successfully moving to Toronto after graduation and securing my own apartment as well as becoming a manager before the age of 25.
Q. Would you recommend Humber to future students?
A. Over and over again! I know they have expanded/renovated their North campus since I graduated and it looks like such a great place for future students to learn and grow!
Q. What are your responsibilities as an Office and Events Manager?
A. I would consider myself the “go-to” person! I handle the day-to-day office management as well as the planning and execution of events such as our holiday party, annual ski trip, team building exercises etc.
Q. What is the biggest challenge you have encountered in your career?
A. Growing pains! I started as a Front Office Coordinator and have grown into many other roles during my 3 years here. We have doubled in size since I started. It was very fast paced however it gave me the ability to grow within the company, grow personally and learn more about myself.
