A. Fitness & Health Promotion - 2016

Q. Why did you choose Humber College?

A. Program curriculum, faculty and amazing coordinators.

Q. What are 5 skills Humber taught you that are necessary to be a top performer in this job?

A. Professionalism, passion, respect, knowledge, integrity

Q. How was your major related to your current work?

A. It directly applies to everything I do. From personal training and conducting group fitness classes, to planning events, recruiting, onboarding and coaching staff.

Q. How did Humber prepare you for the work world?

A. What I loved about this program was the “hands-on” experience; pretty much everything you learn in class, you are able to test in practice! This is attained by: on-campus internships, industry placement, organizing real events, exercise labs and more! The faculty is always available to help students that are committed to succeeding in this program.

Q. What was the biggest obstacle you faced during your time as a student?

A. I am a mom of 2 kids, divorced, and as I advanced in the FHP program, I became full-time staff at the YMCA. Time management was a bit of a struggle. Also, that little voice inside your head telling you “give up, you can’t do this, this is too much” kept me company the whole program; ignoring it and keep moving forward, was a challenge at times!

Q. How did your experience at Humber help you find employment after graduation?

A. My dream was to obtain a full-time job with a municipality in recreation. When I applied, one of the 3 phone pre-screening questions was “Do you have a Diploma or degree in recreation, kinesiology or related field” and I was so happy I never gave up, so the answer was “yes”.

Q. What do you enjoy about your career?

A. Helping others! Members, staff and co-workers. Having the ability to build, support and lead a team of strong and passionate fitness professionals. And through this, building healthier and stronger communities.

Q. What accomplishment are you most proud of since graduating?

A. My current position as Active Living Programmer with the City of Brampton is at the top! It was my dream, and I worked very hard to get here! I could’ve not done it without my diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion.

Q. Would you recommend Humber to future students?

A. Absolutely! Since graduation, I have been recommending this programs to many fitness enthusiasts that were thinking about working in the industry. Some of them have gone back to school, and I couldn’t be more proud and excited to see them grow and develop as fitness professionals.

Q. What are some challenges you may face on a day to day basis at your current job?

A. Going home on time! There is so much to do, we recently opened a new fitness center, and there is always work to do. Finding that work-life balance it’s been a bit of a challenge! But I am working on it.

Q. What advice would you give a recent FHP graduate on how to make a name for themselves after upon graduating?

A. Find what is your dream job, where you really want to be and don’t stop until you get there! Don’t ever forget your “why”. That reason that made you get this diploma. And find a job that aligns with that!

Q. Which class did you find most beneficial?

A. To be honest, all of them! In every position I’ve been through my career in fitness and recreation, I’ve found myself utilizing skills from courses like Fitness Assessment (my favorite!), Exercise Prescription, Applied Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Anatomy, Health and Fitness Management, Counseling and Communication and Event Planning.
