The hospitality industry can be very competitive, especially for those who are just starting out their career. Taking advantage of unique opportunities in order to further one’s knowledge and understanding of the industry is one of the best ways to set yourself apart from the others and improve your employability. The Intercontinental Hotel Group regularly collaborates with educational providers to help individuals build their hospitality skills and prepare them for their career, using their IHG Academy. This is an invaluable experience that would benefit anyone looking to work in the hospitality industry.

This year, the IHG Canadian Corporate office gave our 3rd-semester Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management students an amazing opportunity to “spend a day in the life of an IHG executive”. Applications for this program began in the summer; in order to qualify, it was mandatory that students were in their 3rd semester of the HROM program, must be in good academic standing and possess a passion to learn and grow in the hospitality industry. Applicants had to complete a short 250-word paper on why they would be an ideal candidate to be selected as a Humber College Ambassador for the day and gain insider knowledge on hospitality operations, sales, marketing and more. Although this opportunity was open to all the 3rd-semester HROM, only 15 students were selected. On November 1st, students were transported from the college to IHG Canada Corporate office in Mississauga where they listened to a specialist speaker panelist, participated in one-on-one’s with industry professionals, and had the pleasure of experiencing a live testimonial from a US IHG Intern who flew out from Atlanta just for this event. To wrap up the day, students took a tour of the Intercontinental Hotel located on Front Street. It’s safe to say our students had a very busy yet productive day!

Thank you to the IHG Academy and all those involved for presenting our students with this great opportunity that allowed them to further expand their knowledge of the hospitality industry!
