On Thursday, August 2nd, the first annual Fitness Palooza took place at the Humber North Fitness Center. This event was organized entirely by third-semester students in the Fitness and Health Promotion program as part of their Special Event Planning course. The Fitness Palooza is a 3-hour fundraising event consisting of back-to-back fitness classes to get members of the Humber community up and active.
Each fitness class was about an hour long, and each had a lot of enthusiastic attendees with about 90 participants throughout the event. The classes were taught by instructors Assata McKenzie, Carmen Puyo-Brooks and Debra Singer, who are all teachers at Humber and Guelph Humber. There were plenty of snacks and prizes up for grabs for everyone who participated, all of which were donated by businesses in the community. Some of these prizes include yoga mats, food certificates, activity trackers, water bottles, and free yoga classes.
All proceeds from this event went towards funding the Kyle Hoseman scholarship. This award is presented to a student who is enrolled in the Fitness and Health Promotion program who has a passion for fitness and wellness, shows integrity, is a strong leader in the community and has honour roll marks. Kyle was a student here in the Fitness and Health Promotion program two years ago, when he tragically lost his battle to Leukemia. Kyle showed tremendous potential and would have made an outstanding leader in the fitness community, which is why this award was made in his honor.
Overall, it’s safe to say the event was a success, having received positive feedback from guests and raising a remarkable amount of money for the Kyle Hoseman Award. Thank you to everyone who donated and participated in this event. It would not have been possible without you.
